Nonprofit boards are entrusted with missions that matter. Yet governance is often reduced to meetings, committees, policies, compliance, and a collection of best practices applied across very different organizations.
Waypoint Governance was created around a different belief: boards govern most effectively when they understand the organization’s journey, the Environment in which it operates, and what that Environment shapes the organization to need.
One Framework, Many Ways to Learn and Apply It
Waypoint Governance is the home of the Compass Governance Framework. Through books, board presentations, workshops, assessments, AI applications, and future learning resources, it gives boards practical ways to learn and apply the framework.
The first priority is helping boards encounter and understand the framework through On Course and practical board conversations.
The Objective Is Congruence
Waypoint Governance does not assume that every organization should become larger, more complex, or more sophisticated. A Plane is not better than a Boat. Different organizations need different ways of operating because they face different environments and journeys.
The board’s responsibility is not to chase growth or imitate another organization. It is to help the organization remain congruent with its Environment and faithful to its mission.

On Course is written for nonprofit board members and officers, foundation trustees, higher education trustees, chief executives, executive directors, governance consultants, and others responsible for helping mission-driven organizations navigate change.
The writing is practical rather than academic. The framework is rigorous, but the language is designed for thoughtful boardroom conversation.
Founded by Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D.
Cam Cruickshank is a nonprofit and higher education executive, board member, governance practitioner, and organizational strategist. He has more than thirty years of organizational leadership experience and two decades of direct experience working with and serving on boards. His doctoral research examined person-environment fit, giving him a long-standing interest in how fit and congruence influence effectiveness.
Across organizations of different sizes and levels of complexity, Dr. Cruickshank repeatedly noticed the same pattern: capable leaders and committed boards could still struggle when the organization’s way of operating was no longer congruent with the environmental conditions it faced. Resource challenges, recurring governance concerns, staff burnout, and strategic drift often appeared to be separate problems. Over time, he came to see them as signs of a deeper incongruence among the Environment, the organization, its leadership, and its governance.
The Compass Governance Framework grew from his effort to understand that pattern and give boards a practical way to recognize, discuss, and respond to incongruence. Waypoint Governance is designed to carry that work beyond one person through books, tools, facilitators, AI applications, research, and future collaborators.
A Waypoint for the Journey Ahead
